When I think about the week at Miss NC, all I that comes to mind is a time of a lifetime. Being able to compete on the Miss NC stage was truly a blessing and I will be forever greatful. I had the best time during my stay at Peace College. To start I had the best roomate ever: Miss Statesville Whitney James! From the time I knocked on her door the first time..to our 2am talks before Thursday rehearsal, I know I have made a true friend. Thank you Whitney for making my experience wonderful, and being a friend I know I can always count on. Another part of my experience that was awesome was being apart of the awesome group A, aka A Game
My group was compiled of Statesville, Moore County, Goldsboro, Spivey's corner, Mt. Holly, Hendersonville, Fayetteville, Eastern Carolina, and of course me UNCP. We all had a great time laughing, riding the van with Mrs. Barbara, meeting for the gym at 6:30am, and waiting on our girls so no one got left (haha sorry Lora.) Thank you group A for making me feel like we had known each other forever. I will cherish the friendships we have made, and hopefully one day we will get to have that lunch or dinner we all promised haha.
To the other Miss NC contestants, I had a wonderful time getting to know each and everyone of you! I thank you all for being so nice and opening your arms to one of the newbies
I must give a shout out to Cabarrus County: Mallory Honeycutt. You are one of the sweetest people on earth! Thank you for the encouraging note and words before competition. Congrats on a job well done, and I promise we are having lunch when I am in Charlotte. I know we will be friends forever! To the Miss NC organization, thank you for putting together such a spectacular pageant. Your hospitaltiy was the best, and all the gifts, wonderful hostesses, sweet van rides, and food really made me feel at home. I can honestly say I will be back, so do not forget me
A special thank you to the photographer for the week: Lenn Long. Your pictures were amazing, and thank you for making all the girls feel like queens the entire week.
Where would I be without my wonderful OT, Carolina Princesses, their families, my family, UNCP team and my awesome friends? Your neverending support, encouraging words, and smiling faces made the journey all worth the while. Thank you for always being my biggest fans, and never letting me down. I am truly greatful to have people like you in my life, and I am proud to have a strong support system standing right beside me.
Congratulations to our new Miss North Carolina Katherine Southard! You were amazing! I know you are going to have a wonderful year, and I expect nothing but the best at Miss America
I know you will knock them all out of the water. I look forward to chatting with you at Miss UNCP! Goodluck and best wishes to a year filled with everything great you could imagine.
After unpacking, finally eating real food (hehe), seeing my wonderful family and friends, laying out by the pool, and heading back to my summer job babysitting the oh so funny Mackenzie, I am truly humbled by the journey I have just experienced. I will cherish my memories of Miss NC 2009 forever and I am very proud to have served at Miss UNCP and been apart of the class of 2009
After the pageant someone told me "you may not have won Miss NC, but you have served UNCP and the community well, and we are all proud to call you our Miss UNCP 2009." I am forever greatful for the blessing I have recieved. I will never stop dreaming, and believe me they are big dreams! I leave you with this bible verse: "The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath My word, let him speak My word faithfully." - Jer. 23:28
May you have a wonderful Wednesday and many blessings to you,
with all my love,

Hello all,
I am deeply sorry that it has taken me so long to write about my adventures as Miss UNC-Pembroke. I have been extremely busy with perparations for Miss NC. I wanted to let you know about the things I have been envolved with since the last time I wrote.
Last Monday I turned 20 years old, and I must say I had a fabulous time celebrating with family and friends. Thank you all who made my birthday the best one to come
After birthday madness, the UNCP team headed to Raleigh, NC for Miss NC rehearsal. I was totally excited and glad to finally be on the Miss NC stage. Rehearsal was a success and everything came together fantastically (if that is even a word.) I won't tell you anything, I want all of you to be surprised! All I can say is you will be very impressed with this year's pageant.
On Saturday my carolina princesses, their moms, and I headed back to Raleigh to Race for the Cure at Mereidith College. I had the wonderful opportunity to volunteer at the survivors tent, as well as hold up the signs for survivors to file in line for the walk. I had the chance to speak with many people across our state about my platform and the journey I was about to embark apon. I was also amazed at the stories I heard from survivors and caregivers about their struggles with Breast Cancer. Their stories make me so proud to have Breast Cancer awareness as my platform, and my heart goes out to each and every family who is dealing with this disease. Their stories made me realize once again why I do what I do, and how much passion and heart I have for the people of North Carolina.
Sunday was a super busy day with an appearance at Raynam Assembly of God for their youth Sunday service. Thank you to the chuch for giving me the opportunity to share my testimony and talents with you. I truly enjoyed the service and fellowship. After church I headed back to UNCP for my wardrobe showing. I must say everything went GREAT!!! I am very proud to be apart of the UNCP team, and everyone looked amazing. I believe we are very blessed with talent, intelligence, beauty, and the gift of having a loving community in our lives. Thank you to everyone who came out and showed your support for the UNCP team. Everything was a total success, and Brandi and I can only hope to represent you to the best of our abilities on the Miss North Carolina stage next week. Thank you for allowing us to come into your hearts and share our passion for the community and our platform's as we have worked our way to such an amazing accomplishment as competing for Miss NC's OT, and Miss NC.
I will be moving in on Saturday morning at Peace College in Raleigh, NC at 8am. I will be in Raleigh until the following Saturday competing, making new friends, and making tons of memories to last a lifetime. Please check the Miss NC section of the website for preliminary night break down's, as well as the address for Peace College. We would love to hear from all of you
Check back after the pageant for photos of our journey.
With Miss NC on my mind and hopes of being able to serve the state of North Carolina I leave you with this to ponder...

What an amazing opportunity I had yesterday to meet Miss USA 2009, North Carolina's very own, Kristen Dalton!!! Mrs. Tonya called at 7:30am and told me the good news about being invited to Kristen's homecoming by Ms. Michelle. I was super excited and half asleep
At around 1:30pm I called Mrs. Tonya back and told her I would be able to go...and boy what a time we had! After running the roads of 74 and downtown Wilmington we finally reached our destination of the Riverfront Park, where Kristen would make her entrance. As soon as Kristen stepped on the stage the community showed their full support. I must say Kristen is very well deserving of the title of Miss USA. She is an amazing speaker, who reaches out to her community, and does not forget to remember the people who have supported her. After listening to music and watching dancers, I had the pleasure of taking a few pictures with Kristen, but most importantly chatting about competing at Miss NC in a few weeks. My favorite thing Kristen said was "your competing at Miss NC in a few weeks..YAY!!!!" We talked about how excited and ready I was. The way she took her time to talk to me and take pictures really meant the world to a 20 year old young woman. This is what a queen should be; ready to take pictures with an open heart and swap stories whether the person is an hour from your home town or thousands of miles away. I want to give a special thank you to Kristen for taking your time to visit Wilmington, take pictures with all of your fans, and most importantly show your excitement for me as I mentally and physically prepare for Miss NC. Haley Ivey, Tonya Ivey, Michelle Fisher, and I had the best time, and as Haley said in the car on the way home "I know this is off topic but I just wanted to say I had the best time today and meeting Miss USA was a dream come true."
"Happy are those who dream dreams and are ready to pay the price to make them come true.” - Leon Joseph
Each event of my life is another step towards my goal of Miss NC. I am ready to pay the price for making it come true...Until next time
With Wilmington winds and beautiful sunsets,
Katy Locklear

Greetings from the backwoods of Laurinburg, NC! Last weekend I had the best time sharing experiences, making memories, and learning to cope. I was a camp counselor at Camp Care. This camp is for children who have dealt with traumatic events in their lives. I am very proud to say I was the leader for the female Balloon Chasers (the youngest group, 8 years old.) These girls were absolutely wonderful! After the first time we met, picking up luggage I knew we were going to have a great time. On Saturday evening my cabin decided to have a talent show. Each girl dressed in wigs, dress up clothing, used wands for microphones, and sang every song they knew. Each girl who danced, told jokes, and sang showed off their talent, and boy are these girls talented. I see future Miss NC winners in all of them! After many meals, sessions, team building games, these children really learned how to deal with their problems. I can honestly say I have learned how to cope with death better. At the memorial service on Saturday night each person at the camp was invitede to light a candle for a lost loved on. I decided to light my candle for my best friend's mom, Angela Connor. The service was very moving, and a time to release all fears. The next morning our groups gathered together and released butterfly's, that symbolized letting go. The children were amazing, and the experience was awesome. I am truly blessed to have had this experience and I am very ready to go back next year! Pictures wil be up soon....so keep checking back
With bug spray, sleeping bags, and camp talent shows,
may you be blessed

WOW! I can honestly say I have not stopped since the last time I wrote. Thursday night my cell phone rang, and I was asked if I could do a favor. How could I say no, knowing I would get to spend my morning with numerous elementary students? I couldn't so, my journey began at 6am on Friday morning, and I did not stop until 1am Saturday morning! I had the lovely opportunity to sing the National Anthem at Pembroke Elementary's Family Fun day. (BOY WAS IT FUN!!!) Upon arrival I was picked up in a golf cart and taken to the back of the school. I really had the royal treatment. After speaking with several students I joined in with the 1st graders dancing to the Mocorana...I felt so old considering that song came out when I was in 4th grade
Next the 2nd graders coaxed me into dancing wtih them. They must have known I needed the cardio workout!!! After dancing to the YMCA, the Twist, and the Cha-cha slide, I knew my workout for the day was complete. It was great getting out on the basketball court feeling like a kid again. I must thank the wonderful faculty and staff of Pembroke Elementary for their wonderful treatment and opportunity to share my talent with the community!!!
As my journey continued on Friday I was blessed to have the opportunity to sing the National Anthem at Bladen County's Relay for Life. A special thank you to Karen Ruffin and the entertainment committee for asking me to perform (it truly was an honor.) Relay as always was a blast. Visiting with the Dublin Peanut Festival Queens, and making my way across the football field to see the Greater Miss Carolina Sweetheart Queens made me feel at home. From running the football field to my car (realzing how much cardio I need to do), performing on stage, taking numerous pictures, dancing around with my Carolina Princess's to speaking with survivors made me realize what Relay is all about once again. This was a time to give back to the ones who have given so much for others, and walking one step closer to a cure. I was very humbled as I watched and listened to the surviors walk around the track, and joining in announcing why I relay. Everyone came together for a common cause, and being apart of that is just one of the perks of being Miss UNCP.
After 6 hours of sleep I woke up on Saturday morning to travel with my best friend katie Floyd to pick up Mema from Rowland, and have lunch! I must admit spending time with the people that mean the most really touched my heart. As time crept closer I had to start rolling up my hair for the Whitelake Water Festival pageant. Mceeing with the wonderful, talented, intelligent, and most beautiful Erika Taylor was an honor! Swaping stories backstage and then retelling them on stage was absolutely delightful. To my surprise I found another special friend backstage Lora Black, Miss Spivey's Corner. Everytime I see this young women it always brings a smile to my face, because I know anywhere we go together we always have fun!!!! Amazing is the epitome of my OT's (Brandi Scott) performance Saturday night at the pageant. I am thrilled to have her by my side and I know she is going to be a hit in June
Congrats to the new Whitelake Water Festival Queens, you all were beautiful. I had an amazing experience at the pageant, and of course afterwards talking it up with my UNCP team in the parking lot outside
Now we are here; Mother's day! I want to wish all of the mother's out there a very Happy Mother's day! I know my mom totally rocks
!!!!! Without her I have no clue where I would be. I am very thankful that God placed her in my life, and she means the world to me. I love you Mommy!!! Today is the end of a very long weekend, but very worth while!!! I leave you with this to ponder.....
"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore.Dream. Discover" -Mark Twain
I will continue to Expore, Dream, and Discover...because my journey has just begun! Until next time,
